Center for Migration and Refugee Studies
Overview
The Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) is an interdisciplinary center of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at AUC. Situated in the heart of the Middle East and North Africa, CMRS aims at furthering the scientific knowledge of the large, longstanding, and more recent, refugee and migration movements in this region. It is also concerned with questions of refugees and migration in the international system as a whole, at both theoretical and practical levels. The center's functions include education, research, training and outreach. It offers an MA in migration and refugee studies as well as a graduate diploma in the same field. In addition, CMRS works with other AUC departments to offer diversified multidisciplinary courses to its students. Research at CMRS bears on issues of interest to the region and beyond. In carrying out research, CMRS collaborates with reputable regional and international academic institutions, as well as international and nongovernmental organizations. The various training activities organized by CMRS are attended by researchers, policymakers, bureaucrats and civil society activists from countries all over the world. It also provides tailored training programs on demand. CMRS outreach involves working within its environment, disseminating knowledge and sensitization to refugee and migration issues. It also offers services to the refugee community in Cairo and transfers its expertise in this respect to other international institutions.
