Community Informatics is a new concept, a new field within the information science which uses a multidisciplinary approach to ICT to solve social problems and ensure that under-served and disadvantaged communities can benefit from the opportunities provided by the technology. This new field is growing also in Egypt, where ICT is one of the faster-growing fields and has a big potential to absorb new graduates and labor force.
The Innovation Development Team of UNDP Egypt aims at encouraging and spreading the use of ICT to provide solutions to community problems and socioeconomic development challenges, focusing on women, youth, and persons with disabilities. UNDP is currently supporting the Information Technology Institute (ITI), an Egyptian non-profit which works nationwide in affiliation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The ITI is currently implementing the Live Technology initiative that aims at raising awareness regarding the potential of ICT to solve social problems, networking as well as providing technical assistance.
