Lemon Tree Trust

Overview

The Lemon Tree Trust is a non-profit organization established in 2015 by Stephanie Hunt, inspired by the resilience of refugees who cultivated gardens amidst adversity. Its mission is to transform refugee and internally displaced people (IDP) camps through gardening initiatives that foster community, restore dignity, and provide opportunities for displaced individuals. Primarily operating in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the organization supports home and community gardens, focusing on improving mental health, empowering women, enhancing local environments, and ensuring access to fresh food. Projects like the Azadi Community Garden in Domiz 1 camp serve as hubs for learning, socializing, and cultivating produce. Beyond Iraq, the Lemon Tree Trust collaborates with partners in the United States and Uganda to promote urban agriculture and support refugee-led horticultural businesses. Through these efforts, the organization aims to bring gardens and gardening initiatives to every refugee camp and community of forced migrants worldwide, turning desolate spaces into vibrant, green communities.
