Global Women`s Institute

Overview

The Global Women’s Institute (GWI) approach to research in humanitarian settings acknowledges that unequal power dynamics are often perpetuated by the humanitarian aid and research communities. Western evaluation teams or researchers often parachute in and conduct research based on their own interests rather than based on the needs and priorities of front-line service providers. Their approach aims to change these dynamics and support the local development and implementation of evidence-building activities including standalone research and improved M&E systems. It seeks to significantly increase the capacity and resources with which humanitarian organizations can undertake robust M&E as well as research. A key factor in this is building relationships and networks between academic institutions and humanitarian organizations to share knowledge and ensure the evidence being generated is understood and utilized by those who need it the most.
