Cure Violence Global (CVG)

Overview

Cure Violence Global (CVG) is an international non-governmental organization that approaches violence as a public health issue, treating it similarly to how epidemics are managed. Founded in 2000 by Dr. Gary Slutkin, an epidemiologist and former World Health Organization official, CVG's methodology is grounded in the understanding that violence spreads through exposure and can be prevented by interrupting its transmission and changing social norms.

The organization's strategy involves three core components: detecting and interrupting potentially violent conflicts, identifying and changing the behavior of individuals at the highest risk of committing violence, and mobilizing communities to alter norms that perpetuate violence. To implement these strategies, CVG employs trained community members—often individuals with similar life experiences to those at risk—as violence interrupters and outreach workers. These workers operate independently of law enforcement to maintain credibility and trust within the communities they serve.
