OCHA

Overview

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, often referred to simply as UNOCHA, is a key humanitarian body within the United Nations Secretariat that leads and coordinates international responses to emergencies and disasters worldwide. Established in 1991, its primary mission is to bring together humanitarian partners to provide effective, principled assistance that saves lives, protects people, and reduces suffering in crises caused by conflicts, natural disasters, and other emergencies. OCHA plays a central role in mobilizing aid resources, advocating for the rights of affected populations, promoting preparedness and disaster risk reduction, and facilitating sustainable solutions in cooperation with governments, NGOs, and other UN agencies. It also serves as a hub for information and coordination, ensuring coherent action among diverse humanitarian actors and preparing joint appeals to secure funding for global relief efforts.
