Sightsavers

Overview

Sightsavers is an international charity and non‑governmental organisation dedicated to preventing avoidable blindness, fighting debilitating diseases and promoting equal rights and opportunities for people with visual impairments and other disabilities. Founded in 1950 as the British Empire Society for the Blind, it now works in more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia and beyond, partnering with local governments and health systems to provide eye care, distribute treatments, carry out sight‑restoring operations (such as for cataracts), and support inclusive education and community inclusion programmes.

Beyond medical interventions, Sightsavers campaigns for disability rights and inclusion so that people with disabilities can access education, employment and societal participation equally. The organisation reports that a large majority of donated funds go directly to its programmes and it collaborates with international agencies to strengthen sustainable health services and influence policy around blindness prevention and disability inclusion.
