The Council for British Research in the Levant
Overview
The Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL) is a UK-based academic organization and registered charity that promotes high-quality research in the humanities and social sciences focused on the Levant region, which includes Jordan, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. Established in 1998, the CBRL evolved from the earlier British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (founded in 1919) and the British Institute at Amman for Archaeology and History. Today, it operates two major research centers: the Kenyon Institute in East Jerusalem and the CBRL Amman Institute in Jordan.
CBRL's mission is to support independent, collaborative, and ethical research that enhances the understanding of the history, society, and culture of the Levant. It aims to foster academic links between UK-based scholars and researchers and institutions in the region. The organization provides a range of funding opportunities, including project grants, workshop support, and doctoral travel awards such as the Andrea Zerbini Award.
