The Mitigation Action Facility
Overview
The Mitigation Action Facility (formerly known as the NAMA Facility) is a global climate finance initiative that supports developing countries in implementing ambitious and transformative climate mitigation actions. Established in 2012 by Germany and the UK and later joined by Denmark, the European Union, and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), the Facility provides both financial and technical assistance to projects that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster long-term sectoral shifts in line with countries' climate commitments, such as their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It focuses on funding projects that combine public and private sector efforts, are scalable and replicable, and contribute to broader sustainable development goals. The Facility does not simply disburse funds; it also works closely with partners to design, prepare, and implement mitigation actions, offering support throughout the project lifecycle. As of 2024, the Mitigation Action Facility had funded over 60 projects in 38 countries, committing more than €835 million to driving climate action across sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture, and waste management.
