Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy
Overview
The Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID) is a U.S.-based non-profit organization founded in 1999 with the mission of promoting an understanding of Islamic political thought and supporting the development of democratic institutions and values in Muslim-majority countries. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., CSID brings together scholars, policymakers, civic activists, and religious leaders to explore the compatibility of Islam with democracy and to foster political pluralism, human rights, and good governance within Muslim societies. The organization is particularly active in the Arab world, conducting conferences, workshops, and capacity-building programs aimed at empowering moderate voices, bridging ideological divides between secular and religious reformists, and encouraging democratic transitions. CSID is also known for hosting high-level annual conferences that bring together global experts and policymakers to discuss issues at the intersection of Islam, democracy, and U.S. foreign policy.
