American Friends of SESOBEL (AFS)
Overview
Founded in 2006, American Friends of SESOBEL is an all-volunteer, U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose sole mission is to support SESOBEL, a Lebanese day school founded in 1976 that serves children with physical and/or intellectual disabilities—including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and neurodegenerative disorders.
AFS raises funds in the United States to provide educational, medical, and rehabilitative services, including speech therapy, physical therapy, vocational training, assistive devices, family guidance, social integration, and advocacy for SESOBEL’s students. It emphasizes early intervention, embraces children of all socioeconomic, religious, or ethnic backgrounds, and prioritizes family unity as part of SESOBEL’s holistic approach.
Because it is run entirely by volunteers, AFS operates with minimal overhead, directing nearly 100% of donations straight to SESOBEL in Lebanon. It also helps secure grants for staff training and raises awareness across the U.S. about the challenges facing children with disabilities in Lebanon.
