Carboun Institute

Overview

The Carboun Institute is the MENA region’s first independent think tank focused exclusively on climate and energy policy. Formally established in 2025 as a non-profit foundation registered in the Netherlands, it evolved from the Carboun Initiative, which for over a decade worked on sustainable cities, urban systems, and environmental awareness across the Middle East and North Africa.

Its mission is to support policy-makers, communities, and institutions in the MENA region by producing evidence-based research, promoting capacity building, and engaging in advocacy. Major program areas include Decarbonization Pathways (developing low-carbon transition roadmaps while managing social impact), Climate Resilience (helping the region adapt to climate change’s effects on infrastructure, health, water, agriculture), and Climate Diplomacy (addressing how climate action intersects with geopolitics, cooperation, and security).

Carboun Institute emphasizes values such as independence, transparency, pro-climate stance, and building networks across governments, civil society, academia, and the private sector. Its vision is for the MENA region not only to adapt to climate challenges, but to become a leader in sustainability.
