Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (Svenska Freds)

Overview

The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (Svenska Freds‑ och Skiljedomsföreningen) is Sweden’s oldest peace organization, founded in 1883, dedicated to promoting peace, disarmament, and conflict resolution through advocacy, education, and public debate rather than armed intervention. As a non-governmental, non-partisan, and non-religious organization, it works to influence Swedish and international policy on issues such as arms exports, militarization, and international law, while also raising public awareness about peace and security. Although it does not maintain field offices in the MENA region, Svenska Freds engages with issues related to the region, including critiquing arms sales to Middle Eastern countries and participating in debates and solidarity actions connected to conflicts such as the Israel–Palestine situation. The organization operates primarily from Sweden, maintaining local branches and networks that support civil society initiatives and collaborate informally with international peace-focused partners.
