As part of a larger effort to stop the United States from participating in international organisations that he claims don't serve American interests, former President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum ordering the country to leave 66 international organisations, including 31 organisations connected to the United Nations and 35 other international bodies.

According to the White House, the review that preceded the ruling determined that numerous organisations were "contrary to the interests of the United States," inefficient, or wasteful, and it ordered federal agencies to immediately stop funding and participation. Climate change, gender equality, trade, peacebuilding, and migration are among the topics covered by the list.

UN organisations like the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Women, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and peacebuilding offices are among the notable departures. Following Trump's earlier exit from the Paris Agreement, the withdrawal from the UNFCCC, a Senate-ratified treaty that serves as the foundation for international climate negotiations, represents a formal break in climate cooperation.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Global Counterterrorism Forum, and the Colombo Plan are a few of the non-UN entities on the list. Opponents contend that withdrawing from these organisations could reduce American influence and collaboration on international issues like security, public health, and climate change.

The decision is part of Trump's larger "America First" foreign policy, which has seen the United States cut funding for a number of UN initiatives and leave the World Health Organisation, the UN Human Rights Council, and UNESCO. Opponents caution that the change could jeopardies international cooperation and U.S. leadership on the global stage, while supporters claim it protects American sovereignty and taxpayer funds
