As humanitarian needs increase and global aid budgets decline, Germany has reaffirmed its position as a vital partner of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in the Middle East and North Africa. Because of its constant dedication, WFP has been able to provide millions of people in the region who are dealing with conflict, economic hardship, and climate shocks with life-saving aid and resilience building.
According to Samer Abdeljaber, WFP Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, "Germany's support highlights the importance of humanitarian responsibility in an increasingly uncertain world." He emphasised that the collaboration enables WFP to support individuals during their most difficult situations, providing not only financial assistance but also solidarity and hope to those displaced by violence or fighting to survive growing crises.
Germany donated EUR 158 million to WFP operations in the region in 2025, of which EUR 95 million came from emergency aid provided by the Federal Foreign Office. With this assistance, WFP was able to reach 1.8 million people in Gaza, provide targeted food aid in Syria, help families in Lebanon deal with the country's ongoing economic collapse, and provide financial support to Syrian refugees in Jordan.
Longer-term solutions were also supported by Germany, which provided EUR 63 million for resilience programs through its development ministry and EUR 8 million for the "Grain from Ukraine" initiative, which provides wheat to Syria. Overall, WFP operations in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, Syria, and Yemen were supported by German funding, strengthening a collaboration aimed at saving lives now while assisting communities in creating a more secure future.
