Yalla Cooperative

Overview

Yalla Cooperative began in 2018 when three tech bootcamp graduates—Joe Friel in the UK, Simon Dupree in Germany, and Ramy Al Shurafa in Gaza—came together with a shared belief that technology can help create a fairer world, choosing the name “Yalla,” Arabic for “let’s get going.” Their first projects, including a mental health training tool funded by Health Education England, laid the foundation for growth, and by 2019 they had expanded the team despite the challenges of remote collaboration under Gaza’s blockade, strengthening their commitment to inclusive impact. Between 2020 and 2022, Yalla Cooperative grew its team across Europe and Palestine, partnered with organisations to build meaningful digital tools, and earned recognition in the tech‑for‑good ecosphere, even hosting developer workshops back in Gaza. Today, they continue to scale as a global, remote cooperative—deepening ties with the Palestinian tech ecosystem, supporting over 40 freelancers, rebranding in 2024 to celebrate diverse talent, and preparing new initiatives with tech‑for‑good partners.
