According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, there is a serious warning regarding the future of humanitarian aid in Gaza. According to Philippe Lazzarini, the agency is under great pressure due to a severe funding crisis and could stop operation soon. This would have repercussions throughout the Middle East, especially in Gaza City as the agency does a significant percentage of service delivery and those who rely on those services would be impacted significantly.
In addition to the immediate effects of stopping operations, it has been noted that if the agency collapses, there will most likely be large gaps in the delivery of assistance as well as possible shifting of responsibility for humanitarian assistance to Israel, which could complicate an already difficult situation.
For months, the crisis has been developing. Due to funding cuts from countries such as the United States, the agency has become increasingly unable to provide services. The war has created additional challenges for the agency. Hundreds of its employees have been killed and other facilities have been affected by the conflict, making operating even more difficult.
