Shakoufyan
Overview
Shakoufyan is a youth-led civil society initiative and later a registered organization that originated in the city of Heet (Hit), Anbar Governorate in western Iraq. It was founded around 2016–2017 by local young activists in the aftermath of the conflict with ISIS, with the aim of rebuilding community life and promoting social cohesion. The initiative became known for organizing volunteer campaigns such as cleaning streets, rehabilitating schools, and creating cultural and civic spaces that encourage dialogue, peacebuilding, and youth engagement. One of its most notable achievements was the establishment of a Shakoufyan Cultural Center in Heet, which served as a small library, café, and venue for workshops, discussions, and community events focused on non-violence and civic participation.
Over time, Shakoufyan evolved from an informal youth movement into a structured NGO (registered around 2018) working more broadly on development, youth empowerment, and peacebuilding in Iraq. It has collaborated with local and international civil society organizations and has been involved in projects related to democracy education, cultural activities, and rebuilding trust within communities affected by conflict. While its origins are in Heet, its work has extended through partnerships to other Iraqi cities, including Baghdad-based youth engagement programs.
