Mohamed Elzemety
About
I am a medical doctor and public health professional with experience in humanitarian health, refugee and migrant health, health systems, and policy research. My work combines field-based humanitarian experience with academic and research interests focused on equitable access to healthcare, community participation, and strengthening health systems for vulnerable populations. Over the years, I have worked in both operational and research settings, supporting health programmes, coordinating services for refugees and migrants, contributing to policy work, and conducting evidence synthesis and health systems research.
I hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from Mansoura University in Egypt and I am currently pursuing an MSc in Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. My academic background has allowed me to build a strong foundation in public health, epidemiology, health systems and policy, research methods, and global health. I also completed a short course in Qualitative and Mixed Methods in International Health Research jointly organized by the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Nagasaki University in Japan. Alongside my formal education, I completed several professional courses in implementation research, health financing, health systems strengthening, gender and migration, and data analysis.
Professionally, I have worked mainly in humanitarian and refugee health settings. I currently work with Save the Children International in Egypt, where I support health programmes for refugees and migrants, linking healthcare services with nutrition, mental health and psychosocial support, WASH, and protection services. My work has involved programme coordination, healthcare access support, stakeholder coordination, and adapting services to the needs of vulnerable communities. Before this role, I worked as a Healthcare Coordinator supporting access to secondary and tertiary healthcare for refugees with complex medical and psychosocial needs, including during emergency response operations related to the Gaza crisis. I have also worked with organizations such as Catholic Relief Services and Alanda Health Consulting on refugee vulnerability assessments, public health communication, and infection prevention and control projects.
Alongside operational work, I have experience in research, policy analysis, and scientific writing. I contributed to policy briefs and publications on migrant health, digital health governance, protection of health services, and health data governance. I currently conduct a Critical Interpretive Synthesis exploring how NGOs and frontline actors influence healthcare access for vulnerable migrants in low- and middle-income countries. I also served as a Student Editor with the International Journal of Medical Students, supporting scientific communication and editorial review processes.
Through my academic and professional experience, I developed skills in evidence synthesis, qualitative and quantitative research, programme monitoring and evaluation, stakeholder engagement, data management, and scientific reporting. I am comfortable working in multicultural and interdisciplinary environments and have experience collaborating with NGOs, international organizations, healthcare providers, and community actors.
I use a range of digital and research tools including R, SQL, KoboToolBox, NVivo, QGIS, Mendeley, Microsoft Office, Canva, and collaborative platforms such as Teams, Zoom, and Slack. I also have experience working with data collection systems, literature review tools, and qualitative research software.
My main areas of interest include refugee and migrant health, humanitarian response, health policy and systems research, community participation, digital health governance, implementation research, and equitable access to healthcare. I am particularly interested in understanding how health systems respond to marginalized populations and how participatory and locally driven approaches can strengthen accountability, inclusion, and access to care.
