European Union leaders met in Cyprus on April 23–24 to discuss major security and economic challenges that Europe faces. The talks focused on 3 topics which are: The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the energy prices, and the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034.
During the meeting, EU leaders approved a €90 billion loan package for Ukraine and introduced a new round of sanctions against Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the discussions and called for faster progress on Ukraine’s path toward EU membership.
The summit also included talks with regional partners from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Gulf countries about stability in the Middle East. EU leaders believes that diplomacy, regional security, and protecting global energy supplies are all of importance and should be a main focus moving forward.
Leaders also discussed plans to strengthen Europe’s economy through a new “One Europe, One Market” roadmap, which is designed to improve trade, reduce energy costs, and support digital and AI development across the EU.
