International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC)

Overview

The International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC) is an independent, nonprofit educational foundation based in Washington, D.C. that focuses on advancing the study and practice of civil resistance—the use of nonviolent methods such as strikes, boycotts, demonstrations, civil disobedience, and other forms of collective action to achieve social, political, and human rights goals. Founded in 2002, ICNC develops and shares educational resources, research, training programs, publications, and learning opportunities for activists, scholars, educators, NGOs, journalists, and policymakers worldwide. The organization describes its mission as educational rather than operational: it provides knowledge and training on nonviolent action but does not direct campaigns, offer political advice, or fund movement operations. Its work includes organizing seminars and workshops, supporting research and publications, producing educational materials, and providing limited grants related to the study of civil resistance. ICNC's resources are used globally and are available in numerous languages, making it a leading international center for learning about nonviolent movements and social change.
