EIB Provides Additional €500 Million for Morocco Earthquake Recovery
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced a second €500 million package to support reconstruction in Morocco's High Atlas region following the devastating earthquake of September 2023. The new funding brings the EIB's total commitment to €1 billion, with support from the European Union and the High Atlas Development Agency (ADHA).
Essential infrastructure such as roads, schools and hospitals, will all be rebuilt in the areas hardest hit by the disaster. All projects will be designed to become higher earthquake-resistant, safer and have more energy-efficient standards.
The EIB has supported Morocco's recovery since the earthquake occured, providing emergency financing for debris removal, temporary shelters and other urgent needs. The programme has now moved into a large-scale phase focused on long-term reconstruction.
In addition to financing, the programme will provide technical support to strengthen local institutions and ensure the quality of reconstruction projects. It also includes measures to promote gender equality and social inclusion in the education, health and infrastructure sectors.
EIB Vice-President Ioannis Tsakiris said the new financing will help build safer and more sustainable infrastructure while supporting communities affected by the earthquake. EU Ambassador to Morocco Dimiter Tzantchev added that the European Union remains committed to supporting Morocco's reconstruction and long-term recovery efforts.
