The United States has given more than USD 24 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to help over 150,000 refugees and other vulnerable people in Egypt.

This assistance will enable WFP to continue its work in providing food aid to people in desperate need of it. It will bring back the funding that had to be reduced back in November because funds were unavailable. In addition, The support will also help local markets in communities that host refugees.

Egypt is home to over a million refugees and asylum seekers, mostly Sudanese who had to leave their homeland to escape fighting and hunger. A significant number of families are facing hardships as a result of food price and cost of living increases along with the shortage of jobs.

WFP said the support helps families buy enough nutritious food and improves their daily lives. The organisation added that this new funding from the United States will help protect vulnerable families and provide important support as humanitarian needs continue to grow.
