Recent conflict escalations across Yemen have triggered a devastating wave of displacement, forcing over 200,000 people to flee their homes in just a few weeks. Many families are now displaced for the second, third, or even fourth time, escaping active fighting in areas like Al Mocha. With more than 5 million people displaced nationwide, these families face critical shortages of safe shelter, clean water, sanitation, and essential protection, alongside growing climate risks like severe flooding.
To address this urgent crisis, the European Union has allocated €9.5 million for 2026 through ECHO to support the Yemen Displacement Response (YDR) Consortium. Led by the Danish Refugee Council alongside Acted, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and the International Organization for Migration, the initiative aims to assist over 321,000 vulnerable individuals across 11 governorates, including both displaced families and host communities.
Building on a previous EU-funded phase that reached 242,000 people across 200 sites, this action delivers multi-sectoral relief. Beyond providing emergency shelter and clean water, YDR partners deliver site management, protection services, legal aid, and disaster preparedness. By working with local leadership structures, the program helps communities address immediate challenges while building resilience against future shocks.
For displaced individuals like Ahmed Salem, a daily wage worker who fled Al Mocha to Lahj without an income, this aid is a vital lifeline. With funding shortages putting immense pressure on aid organizations across the region, this renewed EU-backed partnership ensures that emergency assistance reaches the most vulnerable displacement sites quickly and effectively.
