Since 2011, as a result of the increasing violence in Syria, there has been large numbers of Syrians travelling to Egypt to look for shelter and safety. According to the UNHCR, more than 120,000 refugees have registered up until September 2013, and most of them live in urban areas throughout Egypt. Syrian refugees have been facing various issues such as financial instability, unemployment, scarce housings, education, health, social and psychological issues.

Local and international organizations are using different approaches to support the Syrian community. Plan Egypt is focusing on education, giving Syrian children the opportunity to catch up with the months of school they missed. To encourage the families to send children to school, Plan supports them with financial and non-financial support (i.e. school kits). In addition, for a more holistic approach to the children's needs, they also offer psychosocial support, encourage livelihood activities, and promote socialization among Syrians and Egyptians.

CARE Egypt works on psychosocial assistance, through support groups or individual counselling. CARE also conducts awareness campaigns about sexual exploitation, sexual and gender-based violence.

Save the Children Egypt also works in the fields of education and psychosocial support, adding to this a focus on child protection, creating community-based Child Protection Committees. In addition, Save the Children also works in health and livelihoods activities and services.
