Avocats Sans Frontieres
Overview
Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF), founded in 1992 in Brussels by a group of Belgian lawyers, is an international NGO specialized in the defense of human rights and access to justice. Its headquarters are in Brussels, with regional offices in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, including in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, Uganda, Morocco, Central African Republic, and Belgium.
Its mission is to promote independent, fair, and effective judicial systems: ASF strengthens the capacities of local actors (lawyers, judges, community leaders, etc.), provides direct legal assistance to vulnerable populations, and advocates for legislative reforms that uphold fundamental rights. The organization also engages in advocacy campaigns, such as “The Criminalization of Poverty,” and manages the Justice ExPEERience network, which brings together over 800 civil society actors in around 50 countries.
