Saber Gharbi

Having majored in English Language, I have undertaken many positions requiring advanced linguistic competences and communication skills in English in addition to French and Arabic. I am currently working as a Program Officer within the Tunis-based team of Deloitte Consulting. The project I am involved in is called TADAEEM which is the acronym for Tunisia Accountability, Decentralization And Effective Municipalities. As its name indicates, the project is basically aiming to reduce the level of decentralization and that is from the closest perspective to the Tunisian citizen which is the municipality. The project is focusing on 31 municipality in 11 governorates around the country (Kef, Siliana, Kairouan, Mahdia, Gabès, Sfax, Zaghouan, Tataouine, Tozeur, Kebili and Gafsa).

I have also worked as s a CSO and trainee Coordinator within the North Africa Office of BBC Media Action, in Tunis. From October 2016 to November 2017, I used to be the main project point of contact between BBC Media Action and CSOs as well as trainees in Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, during which I have been playing an outstanding coordinating role between the three different projects (Algeria, Libya and Tunisia) with a special focus on women and youth. Since then, I have not only supported on the development of CSO networks, helped formalize and strengthen relationships with CSOs, but also worked closely with trainers, trainees and BBC Media Action staff to integrate CSOs into capacity-building and production activities in line with agreed objectives where possible.

Added to this, and for approximately two years, I used to work as a Program Assistant within the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI Tunisia), more precisely in the department of Civil Society and Election Monitoring. From November 2013 to July 2015, I was essentially working with Tunisian civil society organizations at the national and local levels has allowed me to acquire substantial experience and extensive skills in institutional development, outreach tools, networking, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms and civic and community organizing.

I have also been given the opportunity to be part of the local observation process in the 2014 Tunisian both legislative and presidential elections through the Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) which is a highly advanced and sample -based observation technique that have been used in more than 50 countries around the world. One more detail that can enormously make this experience be unique is the fact that Tunisia is the first country in the Arab World and the Region to apply the PVT observation method. The expertise and the skills that I have acquired have particularly allowed me to deepen my analytical expertise about the economic, political and social developments in the region with a focus on Tunisia during the transitional phase.

I have also been given the opportunity to work in the field of the research assistance and instant translation (interpreter) inside the former National Constituent Assembly (Parliament). This professional experience used to start on a freelance basis by assisting the different political researches that were conducted around the NCA theme. The researchers with whom I worked were all foreigners, basically from the EU, who’s their major field of study was Political Sciences and International Studies. This position has allowed me the opportunity to interface not only with several government representatives and stakeholders at the national and local levels, but also with political parties’ spokespersons and civil society activists.

My volunteering experience has been enormously endorsed when I have officially joined the Tunis Hub of the Global Shapers Community. By being a member of this young and creative worldwide family that belongs to a bigger family of the World Economic Forum (WEF), my networking skills have been greatly improved, especially with the EU networks, and which I think is of a great value to the position I am applying for.

Thanks to proven linguistic competences in English, French and Arabic, which I believe is an asset for this position, as well as excellent interpersonal, managerial and communication skills, I have been able to develop and maintain outstanding stakeholders and partner relations (in North Africa, the Middle East, parts of Europe ...etc.) and operate effectively in a multi-cultural environment throughout my career.
