Sustainable Schools Initiative
Overview
The Sustainable Schools Initiative (SSI) is a leading environmental education program in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), established in 2009 by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). It aims to instill sustainability values in students, teachers, and the broader school community by fostering environmental awareness and action. The initiative consists of four key components: the Green School Audit, where schools assess and reduce their environmental impact; Eco Clubs, which encourage student-led sustainability projects and community engagement; Training of Trainers, a program equipping teachers with the necessary skills to incorporate environmental education into their lessons; and Field Trips, offering hands-on learning experiences in nature. By encouraging schools to reduce their ecological footprint while increasing their positive contributions to sustainability, SSI plays a vital role in shaping environmentally responsible future generations in the UAE.
