CIVICUS
CIVICUS
Overview
CIVICUS is a global alliance of civil society organisations and activists dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society throughout the world. They were established in 1993 and since 2002 have been proudly headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, with additional hubs across the globe. They are a membership alliance with more than 4,000 members in more than 175 countries.
They work to strengthen citizen action and civil society toward a more just, inclusive and sustainable. Their work is guided by their three strategic goals, which reflect their belief that people-powered and collective action is at the centre of transformative change. The contributions of voting members joining the CIVICUS Alliance are allocated to the CIVICUS Solidarity Fund.
The objectives of the CIVICUS Solidarity Fund are to:
- Enhancing solidarity within the alliance, fostering a sense of belonging to a global movement for change.
- Supporting civil society diversity and resilience, especially among smaller, non-formal actors where civic space is restricted or closed.
- Creating opportunities where they do not exist for change seeking actors to contribute to a more just, inclusive and sustainable world.
