European Endowment for Democracy (EED)

Overview

The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is an independent grant-making organization established in 2013 by the European Union (EU) and its member states to promote democracy, human rights, and independent media in the EU’s neighboring regions. It provides flexible and rapid funding to activists, civil society organizations, and independent journalists, particularly in countries with restricted political environments. Operating primarily in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Western Balkans, the EED supports grassroots movements, opposition groups, and media outlets facing repression. Although funded by the EU and various European governments, it functions independently to ensure swift and direct assistance.
