Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA)
Overview
The Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) is a European Union–backed initiative dedicated to enhancing research and innovation cooperation across the Mediterranean region. Established in 2017 and headquartered in Barcelona, PRIMA operates as an independent foundation under Spanish law. It was created under Article 185 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and is co-funded by the EU through Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programs.
The organization's mission is centered on addressing key regional challenges through research and innovation, particularly in the areas of water management, farming systems, and agri-food value chains. These focus areas are approached through a Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus framework, which promotes integrated and sustainable solutions to interconnected resource issues in the Mediterranean.
