UNDEF

Overview

The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) is a United Nations trust fund established in 2005 by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to support democratization efforts globally by empowering civil society rather than working directly with governments. It provides competitive grants (typically US $100,000–$200,000) to local and regional non-governmental organizations, independent bodies, and civil society groups for two-year projects that strengthen civic engagement, promote human rights, support electoral processes, enhance rule of law, encourage youth and women’s participation, and expand media freedom and access to information. UNDEF is financed entirely by voluntary contributions from more than 40 Member States, and has funded hundreds of projects in over 130 countries, playing a unique role within the UN system by reinforcing democratic governance and inclusive participation from the ground up.
