This week, a devastating attack on El Fasher Maternity Hospital in North Darfur, Sudan, reportedly killed at least 460 patients and their families. “To kill women as they prepare to bring new life into the world is an unspeakable atrocity,” said Ms. Diene Keita, Executive Director of UNFPA. “The world must not stand silent.”
Amid the horror, a powerful photo essay shows how one Sudanese midwife continues to make a difference — opening her doors for years to women in need, as both a mentor and a friend.
Elsewhere, the Kosti Maternity Hospital, supported by UNFPA, remains a lifeline for the local community and more than 250,000 displaced people, offering safety and care in a country torn by war.
Meanwhile, UNFPA warns that access to contraception is at risk due to global funding shortfalls. “Contraceptives save lives,” said Ms. Keita. “Let’s keep our promise to women and girls — to protect their rights, their choices, and their future.”
