Sara Formisano

I am a senior expert in gender, peace, security, rule of law, and human rights, with over 25 years of international experience across more than 70 countries worldwide. My work has focused on designing, managing, and advising on complex programs in conflict-affected and fragile contexts, from Ukraine to South Sudan, from Mali to Armenia and Azerbaijan. I bring a strong commitment to gender equality, conflict transformation, transitional justice, and the empowerment of marginalized communities affected by violence.

I hold a degree in Political Science, specializing in international policy and conflict mediation, and a postgraduate degree in Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation. I have pursued advanced studies in Gender Rights at FLACSO, and I am a certified peacebuilding trainer by UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research), an accredited mediator by Mediators Beyond Borders, and a specialist in criminal investigation of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and war crimes documentation. I have supported investigations into war crimes and SGBV, working to strengthen national actors’ capacities and ensure survivor-centered approaches to justice in post-conflict and transitional settings.

Currently, I serve as Senior Advisor on Gender, Peace, and Security for Scintille – Association for Gender and Peace Security (SAGAPS), a think tank I founded to promote women’s meaningful participation in peace processes. I am also the lead of Women in Equality for Lasting Peace – Peace House, an initiative hosted at the University of Parthenope and supported by the Rotary Peace Foundation District 2101, focused on grassroots capacity-building for refugee women as peace agents and trainers of trainers.

In addition to my advisory work, I have held senior management and technical roles with OSCE-ODIHR, EEAS, the UN, Tetra Tech, and Marie Stopes International, leading multi-country programs, developing organizational strategies, and supporting security sector reform, rule of law initiatives, and transitional justice processes.

I am recognized for my ability to lead and inspire multicultural teams under pressure, build strategic partnerships, and translate international policy frameworks into practical, sustainable action for peace and security. My core strengths lie in mediation, peacebuilding, war crimes investigation support, gender mainstreaming, and organizational development in complex political environments.
