UN Women, together with other partners coming from the civil society, women’s groups, governments, research organization, the private sector, the media and other UN agencies, has launched the Safe Cities Free from Violence against Women and Girls program.

Cairo is among the first 5 cities that benefitted from this intervention during the pilot phase. The project aims to create safer urban areas free from sexual harassment and violence, for women and girls to use public space and transportation more comfortably.

The program acts on different levels, empowering women of their rights, building the capacity of stakeholders, increase awareness, advocating for comprehensive policy response, working with the media, involving boys and men to promote behavioral change towards women and become agents of change, and integrating a gender perspective into socio-economic and urban planning plans.
