Water scarcity is a big problem around the world. In Egypt, many people do not have enough clean water to use every day. This is especially hard for poor families living in rural areas.

To help fix this, the Sawiris Foundation and its partners started a project called "Water is Life". The project helps families in four main areas in Upper Egypt: Sohag, Assiut, Minia, and Qena.

The project aims to construct and repair twenty-seven local water treatment plants. The project is laying a well-established pipe network in this area to provide piped water connections to two hundred households. Clean drinking water will be available to over eleven thousand six hundred households.

For distant households that are not connected to the main pipe system, the project utilizes the technology of water delivery by "water taxis." It also teaches families the basics of sanitation and saving water. Local residents are trained in operating and keeping water plants in a good condition.

What is more, scientists found out what type of water is preferable for the locals. Residents are in favor of water which has been filtered rather than treated with chlorine. Through chlorination water changes the taste of local beverages like tea while filtered.

When tested, eight out of ten people said filtered water tasted better. Most women said they were much more willing to use and buy filtered water because of its better taste. They also believed that better-tasting water was healthier for their families.

In the future, team members will study how this clean water improves health, like reducing stomach and kidney problems. They will also see if it saves time for women and girls who usually carry water.

By using smart ideas and listening to what local people need, the project helps make sure everyone gets the clean water they need to live a healthy life.
