AJEM

Overview

Founded in Lebanon, AJEM is a human rights organization focused on the protection and rehabilitation of vulnerable populations within the criminal justice system. It champions the abolition of the death penalty and works to ensure humane treatment for detainees and prisoners—especially those unable to defend their legal rights. AJEM asserts that capital punishment is a form of torture and calls for justice rooted in rehabilitation rather than vengeance.

AJEM provides direct legal services, including counseling and advocacy, to vulnerable individuals such as Syrian refugees, detainees in Lebanese prisons, and those in civil or criminal proceedings. Their multidisciplinary teams—comprising lawyers, nurses, and educators—deliver support in refugee camps, detention facilities, and prisons. This includes assistance with civil documentation, criminal defense, and periodic legal updates to central headquarters.
