Overview

The American Federation of Teachers is a union of professionals that champions fairness, democracy, economic opportunity and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. AFT has a rich history of promoting progressive causes, such as equal pay and educational opportunities, and has played a significant role in civil rights movements. The union is structured in a pyramid format, connecting individual members to local unions and state organizations. Its activities include collective bargaining, advocacy for better wages and benefits, and efforts to influence education policy. AFT is governed by elected officers and a 43-member executive council, ensuring representation and support for its diverse membership
