Overview

Biological diversity affects life in all its forms: the water we drink, the food we eat, the plants we grow, the living things around us. It is also biodiversity that regulates the major biogeochemical cycles of our planet, including the climate. More than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity, while 1.6 billion people rely on forests and non-timber forest products for their livelihoods. More than 50% of synthetic medicines are derived from natural products; 100% of our food comes from nature. Habitat degradation and biodiversity loss threaten the livelihoods of more than a billion people living on dry and sub-humid lands. These are enough arguments to try to preserve biodiversity.
