Association of Women Rights in Development

Overview

The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is a global feminist organization founded in 1982, dedicated to advancing gender equality, sustainable development, and women's human rights. As a membership-based movement-support organization, AWID comprises over 5,000 members across 180 countries, including activists, academics, policymakers, and development practitioners. Headquartered in Toronto, with offices in Mexico City and Cape Town, AWID operates internationally to support feminist movements and advocate for systemic change. AWID focuses on several priority areas: resourcing feminist movements, building feminist economies, advancing universal rights and justice, challenging religious fundamentalisms, and supporting women human rights defenders. Through initiatives like the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs), AWID monitors and counters anti-rights initiatives threatening international human rights systems. The organization also emphasizes the importance of inclusive feminism, centering the voices of marginalized groups, including Indigenous women, disabled people, and youth.
