Overview
The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), established in 2000, is one of Greece's foremost research institutions, operating as a non-profit legal entity under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation of the Greek Ministry of Development. Headquartered in Thessaloniki, CERTH encompasses five specialized institutes: the Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI), Information Technologies Institute (ITI), Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT), Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB), and the Bio-economy and Agro-Technology Institute (IBO). Together, these institutes engage over 1,100 professionals, predominantly engineers and scientists, across six regions and seven cities in Greece.
CERTH's multidisciplinary research spans critical areas such as sustainable energy, climate change, artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, healthcare, nutrition, autonomous vehicles, smart cities, and the circular economy. Its mission focuses on advancing research, development, and innovation to benefit society. Financially, CERTH is largely self-sustained, with an average annual turnover of approximately €40 million, primarily sourced from competitive research projects, industrial contracts, and governmental funding. The center has received numerous accolades, including the European Descartes Prize and the Microsoft International Contest Prize, and ranks prominently among European research centers in terms of participation in EU-funded programs like Horizon 2020.
