Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer (INSTM)
Overview
The Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer (INSTM) is Tunisia’s national marine science and technology research institute, under government supervision (linked to the Ministry of Agriculture and scientific research authorities). Its core mission is to conduct scientific research programs related directly or indirectly to the sea and its resources — including fisheries, marine environment, aquaculture, oceanography and sea technologies — and to participate in national, regional and international marine research networks. INSTM also works to transfer scientific knowledge and research results to policymakers, marine professionals and scientists, to support sustainable decision‑making and management of marine resources, and to raise public awareness about marine conservation and biodiversity protection. The institute hosts multiple specialized laboratories (such as marine biodiversity, aquaculture and marine environment) and regional units, helping tackle coastal development challenges, environmental monitoring and the preservation of marine ecosystems in Tunisia.
