The Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC) is a scientific network established in 2015 to provide reliable, policy-relevant knowledge on climate and environmental changes affecting the Mediterranean basin. Bringing together more than 600 scientists from over 35 countries, MedECC operates as an independent, volunteer-based network that synthesizes research and produces comprehensive assessment reports to support decision-makers, institutions, and the public. Its work covers pressing regional challenges such as rising temperatures, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and the impacts of climate change on human health and livelihoods, with a focus on the Mediterranean’s southern and eastern shores that overlap with the MENA region. The network is coordinated through its Secretariat, hosted by Plan Bleu in Marseille, France, and is supported by international institutions and donors. Rather than providing direct funding, MedECC’s role is to connect experts, generate evidence, and bridge the science–policy gap to foster sustainable and climate-resilient development across the Mediterranean.
