National Endowment for Democracy-NED

Overview

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. Each year, NED makes more than 1,600 grants to support the projects of non-governmental groups abroad who are working for democratic goals in more than 90 countries.

NED expanded support for initiatives to foster solidarity among civic-minded actors across the region and create opportunities to learn about and apply innovative approaches to tackling governance challenges. It also expanded its support to include a wide range of civil society initiatives on good governance, transparency and accountability of public institutions, and pluralism. It expanded its support to civil society, engaging youth in decision-making and the policy process, and creating coalitions to tackle legislative reform and government accountability.

NED grantees have been addressing ethnic and religious cleavages, and building bridges between communities threatened by these divisions. With NED support, human rights defenders used digital technology to raise awareness, break state monopolies over mass communications, and promote new media organizations, bloggers, and citizen journalists.
