Polis LSE

Overview

Polis is the media and journalism think-tank of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), operating within its Department of Media and Communications. It aims to provide a forum for public debate and policy intervention on key issues in journalism, while producing high-quality research on how media and communication affect society. Polis engages with journalists, media technologists, students, and policymakers worldwide through research publications, public events, training programs, and innovation initiatives. Through its JournalismAI initiative, Polis supports news organizations globally—including in the Middle East and North Africa—to explore and adopt artificial intelligence in journalism responsibly. It provides capacity-building programs, mentorship, and, in some cases, project funding through fellowships and innovation challenges, enabling newsrooms to experiment with AI tools and innovative approaches. While Polis manages funding for specific projects, it does not implement journalism operations itself; its role is primarily to facilitate research, training, and innovation. Its headquarters is at LSE in London, United Kingdom.
