Middle East Democracy Center
Overview
The Middle East Democracy Center (MEDC) is a U.S.-based nonprofit and nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to promoting democracy and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Established in 2024 through the merger of the Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED) and the Freedom Initiative, MEDC leverages over 25 years of combined experience in supporting democratic reforms and civil liberties in MENA countries. The organization collaborates closely with local activists and civil society groups to challenge authoritarian regimes, advocate for the release of unjustly detained individuals, and influence U.S. foreign policy to prioritize human rights and democratic governance. MEDC's mission is to counter rising authoritarianism in the region and to ensure that MENA nations are not excluded from the global movement for democracy and accountability
