REMESS

Overview

REMESS (Réseau Marocain de l’Économie Sociale et Solidaire) is Morocco’s pioneering national network dedicated to promoting the social and solidarity economy (SSE). Established on 25 February 2006 by 24 associations, its inception was inspired by international collaborations, notably with RIPESS during the 2005 World Social Forum in Porto Alegre and further reinforced by the Dakar 2005 meeting on SSE, with support from Oxfam Québec. Headquartered in Salé, REMESS unites a diverse array of cooperatives, associations, mutual societies, foundations, economic interest groups, and professional unions across Morocco. The network’s mission is to foster an inclusive and sustainable development model that prioritizes social justice, community empowerment, and environmental stewardship. REMESS actively promotes fair trade, solidarity finance, sustainable tourism, and the empowerment of women and youth. It also supports local initiatives aimed at income generation, particularly in rural areas, and emphasizes the importance of integrating SSE principles into public policies. Through capacity-building, advocacy, and the dissemination of best practices, REMESS seeks to strengthen the associative fabric and ensure equitable access to economic resources.
