Saferworld

Overview

Saferworld is an independent, not-for-profit international organisation founded in 1989 in Bristol, UK, with its main office now in London. For over 35 years, it has been dedicated to preventing violent conflict and building safer lives in more than 20 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Central to Saferworld’s mission is a people-centred approach: working directly with communities affected by conflict to strengthen safety, security, and trust, while conducting rigorous research and analysis to shape local, national, and international policies and practices for lasting peace. Their work spans five integrated approaches: community programming (supporting grassroots peacebuilding), partnerships with local actors, global policy and advocacy, conflict- and gender-sensitive development, and systematic learning from evidence. Saferworld began with a focus on arms control—campaigning for stronger regulation of conventional and small-arm weapons—and has since expanded into broader conflict issues such as governance, justice, and gender, notably advocating on the Arms Trade Treaty and embedding gender equality within peace processes. Operating through multiple regional hubs—including London, Brussels, Washington, and offices in Nairobi, Kampala, Juba, Mogadishu, and Hargeisa—Saferworld engages in practical, community-oriented security and justice programmes, alongside influencing international policy dialogue.
