Turquoise Mountain
Overview
Turquoise Mountain is an international non-governmental organisation founded in 2006 by King Charles III (then Prince of Wales), former British MP Rory Stewart, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Its mission is to revive historic urban areas and traditional crafts, create livelihoods, and instil a renewed sense of pride in local communities. Turquoise Mountain operates in four key regions—Afghanistan, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, and the Levant (including Jordan and Palestine)—using a holistic model that combines heritage restoration, artisan education, health services, and enterprise development. In Afghanistan alone, it supports thousands of families with humanitarian aid, health care, craft-based livelihoods, and the preservation of built heritage in Kabul, Bamiyan, and other locations.
The organisation places strong emphasis on local leadership and community involvement, with over 95% of its staff being from the regions in which it works. Women and local communities are represented at every level of management. Beyond its on-the-ground efforts, Turquoise Mountain also promotes cultural dignity and resilience through exhibitions at major venues like the Smithsonian and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, reconnecting artisans with heritage that has been endangered or lost due to conflict and displacement.
