Women of the Sun
Overview
Women of the Sun is an independent Palestinian women’s association founded in July 2021 by Reem Al-Hajajreh in Bethlehem. The organization’s name draws inspiration from Ghassan Kanafani’s novel Men in the Sun and reflects its mission to empower Palestinian women as active political and social changemakers. With thousands of members across the West Bank and Gaza, Women of the Sun works to promote a peaceful resolution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict while strengthening women’s roles in public life. Its activities range from peacebuilding collaborations with the Israeli women’s movement Women Wage Peace—such as the “Mothers’ Call” and the “Journey to Peace” campaign—to humanitarian support, trauma-healing programs, environmental initiatives, and leadership development for women and girls. During times of crisis, the organization has provided essential supplies, including food, menstrual products, and maternal care items, to affected families. Its impact and dedication have earned it international recognition, including a nomination for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, selection of its founder as one of TIME’s Women of the Year, the DVF Award, and the 2025 Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment.
